Wannian and London bridge

Xingnan Hu

Introduction

Would you please think about why humans build bridges? What was the motivation for building bridges for you? Was it to link the two banks of the river, or was it simply for trade, or was it to facilitate emotional exchange between the two banks. What are the specific differences between these two bridges? There is also the question of why the architectural style of the bridges varies from place to place. What is the reason for this difference, whether geographical or what? -will discuss the result in the third blog.

Motivation

On 18 August 2021, Marta-Bradtke posted on the How To Discuss website about Why We Build Bridges And Tunnels. [2] Any one of the following four reasons is worth thinking about in depth. Do you have any other ideas besides these?

1. Bridges are an essential link in modern society.

2. Bridges are the crossroads between countries, cities, and regions.

3. Bridges guide traffic by sea.

4. They can increase the mobility of cities.

Difference

1. The length of the bridge is different, with London Bridge being approximately three times as long as Wannian Bridge. This is because the Wannian Bridge is located in Jiangsu province, where the area's geographical features are mainly plains and lakes, which is why the Wannian Bridge is smaller than the London Bridge. On the other hand, London Bridge spans both sides of the Thames. Gathering many fine streams in England, the river flows from the west into London, and the river widens downstream of London, forming an estuary with a width of 29 km.

2. For 2000 years, London Bridge has not only witnessed the history of humanity, but its history is the history of the development of human civilisation. From wooden bridges to stone bridges to concrete bridges, London Bridge has risen and fallen, but the only thing that has remained the same is the water beneath it and its name[3]. The Bridge of All Saints is now a tourist attraction.

3. The difference in construction materials. The bridge is a stone arch bridge, as the name suggests, made of piles of stone. London Bridge has been rebuilt three times, from the first wooden bridge built by the Romans to reconstruct the stone bridge and the concrete bridge with three spans.
